There are some childhood movies you remember. And then there are the ones that somehow find their way back to you years later.
For me, that movie is Barbie™ in the Nutcracker. I loved it growing up: the magic, the music, the Land of Sweets, the beautiful costumes and, of course, Barbie™.
I could never have imagined that years later I would be watching that same story again, this time sitting beside my own daughter. And I definitely never imagined I would one day create a collection inspired by it.
From My Childhood to Hers
Today, Barbie™ in the Nutcracker is the Barbie™ movie my daughter asks to watch over and over again. There is something incredibly special about watching your children fall in love with something that once meant so much to you.
Suddenly, you're eight years old again.. except now you're seeing the magic through their eyes. That feeling became the heart of this collection. When the opportunity came to create a Barbie™ collection for Sunday Littles, I kept coming back to the same question:
What story feels like us?
Sunday Littles has always been about more than what our kids wear to bed. It's movie nights piled together on the couch. It's bedtime stories. It's sleepy cuddles. It's the little traditions our children may not realize are traditions until they're grown. And Barbie™ in the Nutcracker felt like it belonged in that world.
And Then You Started Sharing Your Stories
When we finally revealed the collection, I expected excitement. What I didn't expect was how emotional it would feel reading your comments. Again and again, I kept seeing the same words:
“My daughter is going to love this.”
“I need this for my niece.”
“My granddaughter would absolutely love this.”
And that's when I realized this collection wasn't only about my childhood meeting my daughter's. So many of you were having your own version of that same full-circle moment. Moms who grew up with Barbie™ were thinking about their daughters. Aunts were thinking about their nieces. Grandmothers were thinking about their granddaughters. And suddenly, a collection inspired by a movie from our childhood was becoming something we could give to the next generation.
I think that's what nostalgia really is.
It's not just remembering how something made you feel.
It's wanting someone you love to experience a little bit of that magic too.
Designing a Collection Around Nostalgia
When we started designing Barbie™ in the Nutcracker x Sunday Littles, I wanted it to feel nostalgic without feeling like a costume. I wanted pieces our kids would be excited to put on but that the women who grew up with Barbie™ would look at and immediately feel something too. Every detail was considered through that lens.
The dreamy pinks.
The whimsical details.
The nods to the magic of the story.
And, of course, the softness and comfort that Sunday Littles is known for.
The result is a collection designed for the moments that happen after the excitement of the day is over: movie nights, bedtime stories, Christmas mornings, sleepovers and those quiet little moments at home that somehow become the ones we remember most.
The Full-Circle Moment I Never Expected
There have been a lot of surreal moments while building Sunday Littles. But standing on set and seeing this collection come to life was different. I kept thinking about little Stacey. If you had told eight-year-old me that one day I'd be creating a Barbie™ collection, I wouldn't have believed you. And now I get to share it with my daughter. That's the part I'll remember. But reading all of your comments made me realize something else:
Maybe this collection gets to be a full-circle moment for more than just me.
Maybe it's a mom watching Barbie™ in the Nutcracker again with her daughter.
Maybe it's an aunt giving her niece something that reminds her of being little.
Maybe it's a grandmother watching another generation discover Barbie™.
Different families. Different traditions. The same little bit of magic being passed down.
Now It's Almost Yours
We've spent months designing, tweaking, planning and dreaming about this collection. And very soon, it won't just be ours anymore. It'll become part of your movie nights. Your Christmas mornings. Your bedtime routines. Your gifts to daughters, nieces and granddaughters. Your children's childhood memories. And maybe, years from now, they'll see Barbie™ in the Nutcracker and remember being curled up beside someone they love in their favourite pajamas.
